June 30, 2024 | Ecclesiastes: Unpredictability of Life

Series Overview:

In Proverbs, life seems to be predictable. Cause and effect relationship of doing the
right thing and being rewarded (Prov. 11:27). Psalm 49 concludes that the wicked end up in the
realm of the dead and the righteous are delivered from the power of death and are received by
God (Ps. 49:14-15). But the teacher doesn’t see it that way, as he says “time and chance happen
to all (Ecc. 9:11). We can agree that our experience here on earth is often unpredictable. We
strive to find meaning by doing what’s right, but life doesn’t always respond accordingly. It is
difficult to make the right decision when we lack the understanding of what God’s plan and
activity is at any given moment. This proves to be Hebel, chasing after the wind. With the
uncertainties of life, we need companionship. We need family and friends to come around us
during life’s hardships and when our expectations or dreams are crushed (Ecc. 4:9-12). And if
you trust that God is in control you can be freed to rejoice in the days you’ve been given and
actually enjoy the present because it’s out of your hands. We have hope in our ultimate
companion, Jesus, who put aside the wealth of glory and went to the cross to demonstrate His
love. Although difficult times will come, Jesus will never abandon us (John 14:18), had the last
word in the resurrection, and is with us always (Matt. 28:20).
